Catholics for Change was created in response to the October 12th reading of the letter authored by Bishops Farrell and Vann from the Ambo and in place of the Homily at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dallas.  Bishop Farrell dictated the reading of this letter at Holy Trinity.  It is unclear how many other parishes were subjected to the reading of the letter during mass, but the letter was distributed in various forms and fashions throughout the diocese.

Catholics for Change call on Bishop Kevin Farrell to reconsider and retract his pastoral letter of October 8th which implicitly endorsed a presidential candidate without naming him. The list of what the church calls "intrinsically evil acts" does not begin and end with abortion. In fact, there are many intrinsically evil acts, and a committed Catholic must consider all of them in deciding how to vote. His Holiness Pope John Paul II said in Evangelium Vitae that "The Christian faith is an integral unity, and thus it is incoherent to isolate some particular element to the detriment of the whole of Catholic doctrine. A political commitment to a single isolated aspect of the church's social doctrine does not exhaust one's responsibility towards the common good." A prudently considered faithful vote for a candidate who does not call for overturning Roe v. Wade--but who does reflect virtually all Catholic social teaching--does not meet any logical standard of "materially participating or cooperating in an intrinsic evil" and should not be labeled as such by our bishop.  Sign the petition.

Although the majority of our group supports the Democratic candidate for President, we are a non-partisan group of faithful, committed Catholics who feel that the Bishop has overstepped his authority in publishing this letter.  Regardless of your personal convictions if you feel strongly that the Bishop should not endorse a candidate and direct his parishioners to do so as well, we hope you will join our cause.
